About

The Queen’s Head is a cosy historic pub with a beautiful garden situated in the Surrey market town of Dorking.

It is a cosy, warm and quintessentially English pub with a roaring fireplace in the winter and a leafy garden in the summer. We serve seasonal and wholesome British food using top quality ingredients.

The pub is named after Queen Anne, a pretty ordinary British monarch who ruled for a short period. Throughout her life she only had one hobby, eating, and her husband was drinking, so we think naming our pub after her seems about right.

Well behaved four legged friends are welcome in our Garden, on our Terrace in the Tipi and in the Bar. Please ensure they are under control at all times and remain on a lead.

History

According to the 19th century writer John Attlee, the building was originally a private house. Its appearance is distinguished by its mansard roof, with its slope becoming steeper half way down and with dormer windows.

Dating from the 1780s, the Queen’s Head is a former coaching inn. In his recollections of Dorking in the 1870s and 80s, William Dinnage records that one of the two ‘jobmasters’ who kept private horse-drawn carriages was a Mr Harding of the Queen’s Head. Notices in the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser during the 1890s advised that J.W. Hoad ran a carrier service that left South Holmwood for the West End at 11am on Mondays and Thursdays, called at the Queen’s Head around noon and returned on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

During the Victorian period, a popular pastime for men was to attend ‘smoking concerts’ and the Queen’s Head used to host such events. One in 1894, organised by the Dorking Working Men’s Cycling Club, featured instrumental items on a piano, banjo and cornets, interspersed with popular songs by a baritone and a tenor.

In 1892, the pub with accommodation in two bedrooms and stabling for three horses, was tied to Young, the Dorking brewer, but by 1903 Friary Brewery in Guildford had taken over. Today the pub is tied to Fuller’s and had undergone major refurbishment.

 Garden

Visit our garden with two giant tipis and Silent Pool’s gin emporium. We have decorated our tipis to remind you of Provence - imagine fields of lavender, blooming flowers, wicker lanterns and of course our giant hanging wreath. We have also spruced up our terrace, which now includes a garden kitchen (opening shortly).

We will also be running some special events, such as gin masterclasses. Make sure to check back on our website or social media for further details.

Our tipi set-up has been designed with comfort, current outdoor dining rules and social distancing in mind.
